There are many specific projects in Cebu that you can get involved in! These needs being met helps us to give the best we can to the children in our care. You will see that we most often need the money to purchase needed items rather than the items themselves. However, if you are in the Philippines and have an item that fills a need, we’d love to hear from you!
Please note that anytime we raise more than is needed for a particular item, we will apply the excess to the general needs of our ministry to needy children. Thank you for looking over these unique ways to love our kids!
Summer break starts in April in the Philippines, when hot season kicks in. Each summer our older children get the opportunity to select an activity for their time off school.
The activities enrich their summer calendar and teach them something new. The kids love to return and share what they've learned. We especially appreciate cooking class particpants and the good food they bring home!
This summer we have requests for the following activities:
8 kids interested in soccer camp for a total cost of $545
13 kids who want to take music lessons for a total cost of $636
3 kids who are hoping to take cooking classes for a total of $275
The total for all summer activities is $1,456. A donation to this special project will make these summer activities a reality for our kids.
In the Philippines, school uniforms are the norm. In fact, even some colleges require them of their students. At CSC's Children of Hope School, uniforms are a part of the routine as well. Our teachers wouldn't feel like they were at school if the staff and children didn't have uniforms on! Each day the students wear the same color uniform: a simple t-shirt with black shorts. We see a lot of value in this. The uniforms are a simple way of showing the school day is here, and it's time for the kids to get to work on their important job of learning. Thanks for helping provide them!
In the Philippines, school uniforms are the norm. At CSC's Children of Hope School, uniforms are a part of the routine as well. Not just for the students, but also for our teachers. They come to school in a different polo shirt for each day of the week. You can outfit one of our fine educators with a gift to this project!
Our carpeting at school gets a lot of use! We've taken great care of it. The kids remove their shoes before walking in the carpeted areas, and our maintenance and facilities staff do an excellent job. However, this is the original carpet in our school and it is time for a replacement. You can help dress up the place our kids go to learn!
Our curriculum at school has developed by leaps and bounds over the years. We have started using "consumable" math books. These are workbooks that the kids write in directly. This is much more efficient and cost-effective than trying to make copies before each school day.
The books are great quality to help our kids succeed academically. They are used primarily for the younger grades in our school and last for an entire school year.
Many children arrive from situations in which they were begging, looking through the dump for food or things to sell or relying on a few grains of rice as their only nutrition. New chldren that come to CSC often don't know when to stop eating during their first few meals. They are accustomed to having so little that they gorge themselves until they begin to trust that meal time is consistent and reliable.
We provide 3 healthy meals a day, 365 days a year. The cost to feed each child is $4.30 per day. To feed all 90 children on any given day, the cost is $386 per day. That means it costs $11,765 to feed all the kids at CSC for one month.
Would you help us feed these 90 kids?
All our kids get a special celebration on their big day, which includes their favorite meal and some hand-picked friends from the other houses. And, of course it includes some gifts!
We suggest a contribution of $20 for a child. This is the cost of the average amount of gifts given, accounting for some of the children who have Foster Friend sponsors that help purchase gifts also. Thanks!
We take birthdays seriously! All our kids get a special celebration for their big day, which includes their favorite meal and some hand-picked friends from the other houses. Our US staff gather with the house parents and the kids to sing and make merriment with the birthday boy or girl!
We suggest a gift of $30. This is the cost of an average party, accounting for some of the children who have Foster Friend sponsors that help pay for the festivities.
It takes many vehicles to operate CSC. Children go to the doctor frequently, special needs residents need rides to work and school, and drivers run up and down our road to bring shifts of workers to and from the main road (the road we are on has a stretch that can be dangerous to walk down). We need our vehicles to operate a ministry like CSC...and those vehicles need plenty of gas!
Childcare is naturally, the single biggest portion of the CSC budget. This is what we do: care for children! Childcare workers are the front line employees who care for the kids we all love. You can help provide part of their compensation through this project.
The Outreach department at CSC is one of the unique areas of our ministry that doesn't always get a lot of press, but is very important. We have a Social Worker assigned to working with families who have been served by CSC in the past. These include those in which a child came to live with us temporarily, and then went back home. Also, this program touches those families that abandoned a child, but are still willing to accept help. You can help provide education and pay the staff costs associated with this important work.
Our Teen Home residents are a busy bunch. They are in school, or working, and are involved in church and with friends at the Teen Home and elsewhere. It's good for these young people to take a small trip once or twice a year to get away from their routine. The house parents, Undoy and Edith, enjoy this time away to create special memories. They've gone to a resort to go swimming, visited another island or just gone out bowling together.
We'd like to take our kids on a big field trip, to the neighboring island of Bohol. Every few years, we've had the opportunity to do a big trip like this and it creates a highlight of their time at CSC for many of our kids. We'd visit the famous Chocolate Hills and provide a mix of learning and recreation for our residents.
Not long ago at CSC, we were unable to take most donations of items in the US office. The costs to ship via overseas simply outweighed the value of the items given. Having staff and visitors bring items on airlines also becoming costly. Then we found Forex. We are able to ship items to Cebu in a large box with no weight limit, and they arrive in about 6-8 weeks. We're able to send clothes, school supplies and Barbies!
Our kids love programs. They enjoy putting on plays and shows as part of the classroom activities. We hold all-school programs and events that use a projector. We could also use the projector in collaboration with our newly donated smart board!
We strive to offer the best we can to our kids and having a few more LCD projectors would assist in this endeavor. The projectors are $400 each so the total amount we are hoping for is $1,200 total.
Our school sound system is in need of a significant upgrade. We use a very basic system right now, and we use it frequently! There are morning meetings each week, and in the years since our school opened, we've found this is the spot we do big events like all-staff meetings, children's performances and programs. We would get a great deal of use out of this gift, including mics, mic stands, wires, speakers and amplifier.
